How to Refurbish Alloy Wheels

It is much cheaper to refurbish alloy wheels than replace them. If the job is done well refurbished wheels look as good as new. Here’s how to do it.

Jetwash each wheel to clean muck and grime from the wheel hub. Air blast dry and place the wheel on a workbench. Wipe over with panel wipe liquid to reveal dings and dents.

Use an orbital sander to remove deep dents. Most of the problems will be around the rim of the wheel. Angle the sander down into the rubber to remove dents right on the tip of the rim. Start with 80 grit paper to remove all the paintwork and smooth the metal. Repeat this process for all damaged areas around the rim. Using 180 grit paper go back over the damaged areas and beyond by one finger width to remove all the 80 grit scratches. Go back over the areas again with 320 grit and extend by a further finger width to remover the 180 grit scratches.

Go over the entire wheel with red scotch and panel wipe to remove all the fine scratches remaining from 320 sanding. Airblast dry.

Mask around the tyre. If all four wheels are being repaired at the same time, place a ladder across two work benches and place the wheels on the ladder. Roll the masking paper over all four wheels and stick down at either end of the ladder. Cut out the centre holes over each wheel and stick down to the masking tape on each wheel. Now all four wheels can be primed at the same time.

Spray primer at a 45 degree angle six inches from the rim of the wheel. Each area of the rim needs three or four passes. Spray everything visible at 12 o’clock, then everything visible at 6 o’clock, 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. If done properly, there will be a bright sheen to the wheel. Allow an hour for the primer to dry.

Smooth down the primed area using 400 grit wet and dry paper. When smooth use 600 grit paper to take out the 400 paper scratches. Feather the edges of the primed areas.

Go over the entire wheel with grey scotch to remove the 600 grit scratches. Clean the wheel and remask.

Spray the wheel with your chosen base coat in the same way as during the priming stage. Tack the wheel after each coat has dried. This should only be a few minutes. Put on three or four base coat layers.

The final stage is to spray lacquer over the wheel. Treat the hard areas first such as the outer rim. Spray at a slightly slower speed than before. If done correctly the wheel will look wet. If it looks dry during spraying then not enough lacquer is being applied. However keep the gun moving or the lacquer will start to run.

Follow these stages properly and your alloy wheel will look as good as new.

Drive Time in the Honda Insight

The Honda Insight may not be the car that saves the world and reduces the issue of global warming to a distant memory. However the fact that it is a viable choice for suburban families to make is a step in that direction. Without getting off topic for too long I imagine that the Honda Clarity, a hydrogen powered car is the genuine way forward to a world without quite so many crazy weather patterns. However for now hydrogen service stations are few and far between, leaving us with a choice of either a bicycle or a hybrid. Which at least is one small step for man, in the right direction of, one giant leap for mankind.

The little 1.3 litre i-VTEC engine that is the primary power source of the Insight is zippy and chirpy even when the ECON button is engaged, which I am told reduces the motor’s output to assist the driver be more economical. It just made me have more fun with the glowing green dials (when driving economically) and the blue dials (when driving not so economically). The petrol engine gets a helping boost from a 10 kilowatt electric motor, which may not sound like much but being an electric motor the torque is instant. My fun was aided by the paddle shifters attached to the steering wheel, making this car an altogether surprising package. Especially since it has a constantly variable transmission and the paddle shifters simulate seven gear changes. It’s not bland and it’s not slow, well not for what it is designed to do at any rate. It is a delight to drive with incredibly light but precise steering and once you get used to the auto stop of the engine in traffic or at lights it is peaceful and calm as well.

In terms of aesthetics the Insight is quite a nice car to look at, and it has a host of features as standard. What you get with the Insight, aside from the Honda quality is a safe car that carries the 5 star ANCAP rating. Therefore you will have all the airbags, anti lock brakes, stability control and a body shell that has what Honda describes as crash protection engineering. You also get cruise control, blue tooth hands free phone connectivity, iPod phone dock with usb connectivity, keyless entry and climate control.

But above all the features, and the look, and the safety, and the way the car drives, what you get with an Insight is just that. An insight to the future of how we need to drive and behave on our planet. You learn to be more economical in your driving patterns; you are challenged to get more from less every time you start off. Technology and the way we communicate with each other has changes so fast over the past few years it’s hard to keep up. i remember 10 years ago, someone said that all this so called technology will free up more time in our lives. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen it. i have to admit, getting a message across to someone is a lot easier today then it used to be. Although, I didn’t expect my life to be put on the line because of it.

Since the advent of the text message, we as a society are well aware of the dangers it can reak on the road. Unfortunately, it’s so readily available, that some disregard the risk and text anyway. Of course, I’m sure the thought that nothing will happen to me is logged in their brain somewhere. Maybe if they know that 16% of all crashes were caused by driver distraction, they may make a better decision.

I’m not saying that I am innocent in all this. I am guilty as charged! I’ve done it. Recently, I had a new born son, my first. You want to know how I broke myself of the bad habit. I though of him. really, that simple. Think of the ones in your life that have great meaning to you. Is it worth the risk, putting your life on the line for what. A text? Not me! Go stand by the street and feel the power a car has as it zips past you. now think of the damage it can do if it’s out of control. There is no way to focus on the road and do what needs to be done and react the way one should if your looking down at a phone and texting. Plain and simple.

Many studies have been done on the effects of texting and driving. They all say the same thing./ It impairs your ability to operate a motor vehicle. On average, a person texting will take there eyes off the road for a period of five seconds. Just to give you an idea, if your on the highway traveling 50 or 60 mph, in 5 seconds you will travel about the distance of almost 2 football fields! lot can happen, and it’s the things that you don’t expect, that put is a bad position.

We get so used to driving, we all think were pros! Driving takes a lot of concentration and focus. If your texting while driving, your mind is not focused on the task at hand, DRIVING! Put the phone on silent mode, if you have to text, or talk to someone, pull over. It’s worth your life. Think of the people you have in your life that have great meaning. Think about them when you feel the urge to text. Stay safe and help to keep me safe. I’m on the road with you. My son is most likely in the car seat in the back. He doesn’t deserve to be put into that position because someone feels the need to text while they are driving.

Help to make our roads a safer place to drive. Do the right thing
